− | + | What do we actually know about fashion and clothing during the viking age and the medieval period? This question is taken up by textile artist Britt Kjellesvik Rage in this paper. Using archaeological finds, contemporary artwork, and written sources as her point of departure, she examines what can be concluded about materials, style, colouring and patterns. Among other things she describes, what was unique about male and female clothing and how social differences were expressed in the way people dressed. All arguments are supported by a number of interesting grave finds that are treated in this paper.
| |
