HEIMSKRINGLA

Velkommen transparent.png

HEIMSKRINGLA is the largest collection of Old Norse and Nordic source texts on the internet – currently some 8800 titles.

HEIMSKRINGLA primarily consists of Eddic texts, sagas, and skaldic poetry, as well as background material and sources on Sami, Finnish, and Greenlandic culture.

HEIMSKRINGLA is based on the belief that these texts – as part of our shared cultural heritage – should be freely accessible to everyone.

Johan Christian Dahl - Winter at the Sognefjord - Google Art Project.jpg
Førkristen jul
by Sophie Bønding

»It is a widespread assumption that when Christianity reached the Nordic countries in the centuries around the year 1000, the Christian celebration of Christ’s birth replaced an old pagan midwinter festival. However, the matter is not quite so straightforward. Before the conversion, the word jul (Old Norse jól) evidently referred to a pagan seasonal feast, but its timing, its underlying ideas, and its cultic expressions have all been the subject of intense scholarly debate. This debate continued until around 1960, after which it has largely fallen silent, apart from a few more recent contributions published after the year 2000.«
